Silent Movie

Saturday November 17, 2018
7:00 PM
Historic Grand Rapids Town Hall

The Grand Rapids Arts Council is sponsoring a silent movie during the Christmas Open House in Grand Rapids, Ohio.  It will be presented in the Historic Grand Rapids Town Hall at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 17th.

City Lights, the most cherished film by Charlie Chaplin, is also his ultimate Little Tramp chronicle.  Chaplin plays a hapless but resilient tramp who falls in love with a blind flower girl on the tough city streets.  Upon learning that she and her grandmother are to be evicted from their home, the tramp undertakes a series of attempts to provide them with the money they need, all of which end in humiliating failure.  But after a drunken millionaire lavishly rewards him for saving his life, the tramp can change the flower girl’s life forever.  The result was the epitome of Chaplin’s art and the crowning achievement of silent comedy.  In 2007, the American Film Institute ranked it 11thon its list of the best American films ever made.

The movie will be accompanied by Lynne Long on piano.  She has a real knack for slipping show tunes, classical selections, and anything else she can think of into these movies, and she has a fun time doing it.

Admission is by donation to the Grand Rapids Arts Council.  People of all ages will enjoy this timeless classic!
